Robin 2 - Wolverhampton

UK TOUR 2008

Jan was made most welcome at his customary UK date at the Robin 2, a rockin' place smack in the middle of the gritty industrial heartlands of the West Midlands. Indeed Jan has played here so often now that he is as familiar to local folk in this part of the 'Black Country ' as Ay-nock and Ay-Lie!

There was plenty to admire about the range of skills Jan applied in switching smoothly from hot- house rhythms to screaming heart stopping lead. The audience at this earthy venue eagerly awaited the old Focus numbers and were treated to playful arrangements of some established favourites. With a magical twist of mandarin 'House of the King' became 'Palace of the King.'

In this set though we saw Jan's full repertoire of jazz, blues and dance- beat. A range accumulated during a lifetime of marvelous musical achievement. My personal favourites of the evening were the funky-house style 'Zebra' and a sexy adaptation of the Weller classic 'You do Something for Me'. 'Sylvia' played on that legendary black les paul would have been enough to transport James Blunt, had he have been with us, back to his club in 1973! It did of course deservedly merit a much deserved chant of 'more' from the happy gathering.

Jan was accompanied by the talented trio of Wilbrand Meischke on bass, Coen Molenaar on keyboards and Marijn van den Berg who in the great tradition of rock and roll took centre stage for an energetic drum solo.
