Live in hope: The Wild life album 2 |
|||||||||||
| In December 2004 Belfast-based music writer/biographer Colin Harper unveiled The Wildlife Album. A freelance fundraising venture on behalf of international environmental charity the WWF and the Ulster Wildlife Trust, it featured an eclectic array of local and international folk, rock, jazz and classical artists and was, remarkably, the first wildlife charity to be released in 35 years. From tiny wings-and-prayers beginnings the album has sold widely and steadily via its dedicated website - representing sales to 30 countries across six of the world’s seven continents. Antarctica is the elusive continent thus far but as Harper notes: ‘We come to save penguins, not sell them stuff…’ Now, a year on, Harper and the two charities reveal Live In Hope: The Wildlife Album 2 - a more ambitious, more cohesive collection, with every track on the theme of nature and (as before) with ALL profits going to the charities. Nature columnist Simon Barnes (The Times) provides a sleevenote. Cover star is the Ivory-Billed Woodpecker - the ‘American Dodo’ which reappeared earlier this year in the Big Woods of Arkansas, having been ‘extinct’ for 60 years… Artists featured include Roxy Music, Jethro Tull, Richard Thompson, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jan Akkerman, Steve Hackett, Shaun Davey, Bert Jansch and Bruce Cockburn. Exclusive Live In Hope contributions come from Welsh singer-songwriter Martyn Joseph, Scottish singer-songwriter (and 2005 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards multiple winner) Karine Polwart and cult English rocker Andy Roberts (ex-Liverpool Scene / Plainsong) - and not least from Jan Akkerman (a dazzling acoustic improvisation loosely based on 'Wildflower').
